Question by : What’s the difference between Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese?
I don’t want to be ignorant and offend people by saying that they are the ‘same thing’ just how people say that hispanics and mexicans are the ‘same thing’ which they aren’t. So with the Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese what are their differences and similarities? Is the language and the writing system the same or not?
PS:
If I spelled mexican wrong I’m sorry that tends to involuntarily happen when I type fast…

The differences between spoken Mandarin in Taiwan and mainland China are comparable to English spoken in the US, UK, Australia, of course there are a few terms used differently, but overall everybody understands each other very easily. The writing though has bigger differences, about 30% are different. Taiwan people still uses the traditional characters while mainlanders write some of them in simplified form. When romanizing, the 2 have different phonetic systems, in Taiwan it’s called zhuyin, in China it’s called pinyin.
