Chang Jiang, or Yangtze River, that runs all the way from Qinghai Province in west China to Shanghai separates China into north and south.

In addition to the basic north/south area as determined by the Yangzte River (as Longliveabcdefg answered), there are more detailed geographical regions:

    From: http://www.everyculture.com/Russia-Eurasia-China/Introduction-to-China-Geographical-Regions-of-China.html

China’s total area covers nearly 10 million square kilometers. Two-thirds of the country is high plateaus and mountains with populations living at altitudes from 1,000 to 4,000 meters above sea level and high mountain areas reaching 7,000 to 8,000 meters. Climate varies from subarctic to subtropical. The Han majority is densely settled in the eastern half of the country—also called “inner China”—along the coastal areas, on the great plains, in the river valleys, and in the foothills. Most Han live in temperate zones, at elevations well below 1,000 meters. The minorities are more sparsely distributed over the remaining 55 percent of the country lying to the north, southwest, and west of the main areas of Han settlement. In the mountainous provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou, where Han and other ethnic groups have coexisted for several centuries, they are separated by elevation, with the minorities living at higher altitudes.

Inner China is suited to intensive, settled agriculture with an emphasis on grain crops supplemented by vegetables and fruits. Irrigation systems have long been used to lessen the dependence on rainfall and the damage from floods and drought. These problems have been further reduced in recent decades. Since 1949, the government has completed numerous hydraulic projects along the lower Huang He (Yellow River) and the Huai and Hai rivers. Major projects are planned for the Yangzi (Chang Jiang) in coming decades. Additionally, introduction of chemical fertilizers and insecticides has increased productivity even as drainage projects and hillside terracing have opened up additional land. Conversely, some agricultural land has been lost because of salinization and erosion.

There are eight major geographical regions, which overlap somewhat with cultural or subcultural (regional culture) areas.

    1. The Northeast.
    2. North China Plain.
    3. Loess Plateau.
    4. Northwest.
    5. Lower Yangzi/South Central China.
    6. Maritime South.
    7. Southwest.
    8. Tibetan Plateaus.

The above referenced website gives you greater detail about each one.

This line of demarcation is very important to university students because only schools north of the Yangtze have heat. There are many universities situated just a few kilometers south of the river whose students endure bitter cold in their dorms in the usual harsh winters in Central China. Ditto for the hot season because they have no A/C either.

P.S. International students have heat and A/C. The restrictions apply only to Chinese students.

the Yangtze River divides the country into two parts-the north and the south.
there’s no conflict. but people living in different places have different customs and lifestyles, language, cultures , after all, it’s the third biggest country in the world
but in a small area, for example, in Guangzhou, they think most the other provinces are north.

  6. cao hao says:

Usually, the sign of distinction between north and south China is based on eating habits and what kind of dialect people have spoken in a certain area. in general, residents who living in north areas of the Huai River taken wheat products as thier based food. but in the south areas of the River ,people taken rice as thier main food . to identify from tongues, people from north of Huai River who spoken in northern dialects but the southerner talking in southern languages.you will feel the difference bewteen the two sides of the Huai River clearly, if you go to that area,

  7. Chineseye says:

Yangtze River divides China into northern and southern China. Well, obviously it is not like a straight line that divides the country into two sovereignty, so the dividing line is quite vague here. Sometimes people mention 华北、东北、华东、华中、华南、西南、西北 (northern China, north east China, eastern China, central China, southern China, southwestern China, northwestern China). Again, some area lies in between.

  8. Bethany says:

Divided by the Yangtze River and Qinling Mountains. Yangtze River is the longest in China.
