The Chinese will ONLY accept RMB no other currency. Changing currency (and travelers checks) in China can be a nightmare. My advice would be to change your money into RMB before you go and take it with you.

the only other currency accepted in china from place to place is the hong kong dollar (and even then people will only accept it from time to time)

Mainly RMB. For the other currencies, US dollar is the one most accepted alternative currency specially when you stay in big hotels. Hong Kong Dollars are used in mainly in Hong Kong and accepted some parts of Shenzhen usually selected stores in Lowu border. For your travels to Beijing and specially Wuhan, i advise bringing RMB as you might have a harder time changing currencies.

*There are actually some stores in US that accepts other currencies than US dollar, particularly those stores that are owned by chinese, filipinos, indian, and korean.(those that I’ve seen and been).*

It used to to be US dollar, but now, nothing but the RMB. Sure, you may find someone who would occassional accept something else, but you CANNOT rely on that.

The main reason is that people are very leary of counterfeit money. Most people don’t know what anything but the RMB looks like. Do you know what the RMB looks like?

You gotta convert unless you want to shop, eat, and sleep in all western style places, and even then, I don’t think you could get by.
