The Frog in the Well (Chinese – English bilingual book) (Chinese Edition) (English and Chinese Edition)
The Frog in the Well is a Chinese idiom or chengyu. Chinese idioms are frequently used in Chinese language. They are usually consisted of four characters. Each idiom has a story that is based on folklore, a myth or a historical fact and demonstrates a moral teaching. Irene Y. Tsai (author) and Pattie Caprio (illustrator) combine their talents to retell a story based on a Chinese idiom, The Frog in the Well. This old Chinese fable compares a frog who lives in a deep well to a sea turtle living in a vast Eastern ocean. The frog lives happily in the well. He thinks the well is the world until a sea turtle tells him about the vast ocean. Children will learn to read in English and Chinese simultaneously. This story is written in English, Traditional (with Zhu Yin Fu Hao) and Simplified Chinese (with Pinyin). By learning two languages, your children will be more prepared for the global market place. The Frog in the Well is translated from English to Chinese by Joyce Lin.

The title of this Chinese-English bilingual book is a Chinese idiom. Chinese idioms, which are frequently used in the Chinese language, usually consist of four characters and tells a story based on folklore, myth, historical fact. There is also a moral teaching demonstrated. In this story, a frog hops into a well and thinks that because he knows everything in the well he is the smartest frog in the world. Then he meets a turtle from the sea and learns that there is a bigger world outside of the well. Thus, “the frog in the well” describes a narrow-minded person who thinks he knows a lot but really does not.
This is an interesting and fun story on its own for children to read, but there is an added benefit for parents who are interested in having their children exposed to the Chinese language. The story is not only told in English, but it is also written in Chinese, as translated by Joyce Lin, with both traditional and simplified characters, along with Pinyin, a phonetic notation that uses the Roman
alphabet to represent sounds in Mardarin Chinese, and Zhu Yin Fu Hao, another phonetic notation for learning to read, write, and speak Mandarin. If you want your children to learn more about China and its culture, you should find this book very useful.

Rating:
This is a great book to introduce China, Chinese culture and Chinese language to kids. It is a meaningful story, as retold by Ms. Tsai and beautifully illustrated by Ms. Caprio. The book presents many learning opportunities including the idiom, and the various Chinese characters used and their origins. Hopefully, it will also stimulate more cross cultural curiosity and understanding between China and the U.S. It is intersting for both adults and children.

My boys, ages 5 and 9, have two cousins who were adopted from China. I purchased this book to teach my boys about their cousins’ culture and native language. My older son enjoys learning to speak the Chinese words and marvels at the intricate Chinese writing. My younger son loves searching for all the delightful little creatures hidden throughout each page (bugs, birds, lizards, etc) as well as counting the darling flowers and mushrooms scattered about. Both love the enchanting story and ask me to read it again and again. This is certainly one of the most thoughtfully, beautifully illustrated children’s books I have come across in years – in fact it’s one of our most treasured books! The characters are endearing and a bit humorous (like the frog in his bright reddish pink swimming trunks!). The environments are imaginative and captivating, making you want to explore every detail. The landscapes are full of color and variety appealing to both children and adults. I personally love the sunset ocean scene in the middle of the book. This book would even be a great theme to use for decorating a child’s room. The story is delightful and has a great message that is meaningful to children of all ages. Overall The Frog in the Well is an educational masterpiece, exposing children to two Chinese languages as well as teaching them how to phonetically pronounce the Chinese words. It’s fun to compare the English with the Chinese – my kids actually ask me often to read it in Chinese as they enjoy hearing the sounds! It even has an index of the Chinese letters so children can practice writing in Chinese if they desire. I highly recommend this special, imaginative, inspirational book. It will be an instant classic to your collection and it’s one of those books your children will want to read/look at over and over (and over)!
