    Population below poverty line: 8%
    note: 21.5 million rural population live below the official “absolute poverty” line (approximately $ 90 per year); and an additional 35.5 million rural population above that but below the official “low income” line (approximately $ 125 per year) (2006 est.)

    It’s called statistical manipulation. Even in China $ 90/yr won’t provide a subsistence level of consumption. The US could say poverty dropped to 0% if we set the threshold for poverty level at $ 90/yr.

    Poverty rates in China are some of the highest in the world. The vast majority of people there have to walk miles just to collect water from a polluted stream….

    That is due to the definition of poverty standards.

    China is sure a lot richers than most Third world countries.
