One Response to “How do I find out what the ancient chinese characters are?”

  1. Unknown Darkness™ says:

Perhaps understanding the components of characters would help you. Most Chinese characters are made up of 2 components: the radical and the other part. Radicals are the most basic components of Chinese characters and can usually give you a clue about what the character means.

For example, if you see the radical 氵, you would expect the character to have something to do with water.

Some radicals come from characters, like how 亻is 人(person) when written in character form. When you see 人 you can expect the character to be related to people in some way.

Edit: Sorry, my earlier point about 亻being related to action words is wrong; I was referring to “扌”, which is related to the character 手(hand). ^^”

And if you make it a point to notice radicals, you can see the differences between very similar looking characters without being confused; e.g. 谝 and 褊 (notice the left; the radicals are different).

Going back to how the characters were formed from pictures may not help you because much of the modern writing do not look that way anymore. That’s why I suggested radicals. Hope this helps and good luck. :) )
