|Good but could be much better,
Young Chen’s Pocket Legal Dictionary (CE/EC) is compact and handy, clearly printed with pinyin as well as (simplified) Chinese characters for all entries in both sides of the dictionary. There are two principal shortcomings: (1) It seems to be designed only for people interested in U.S. law. While this may be quite understandable, I was hoping for something that would help me deal with legal terminology in China. (2) Rather than presenting a single alphabetical listing of terminology, terms are entered in eight separate categories – Commercial Law, Criminal Law, Family Law, etc. This seems badly misguided, as it means that before looking up a term, the user must first decide which category is the most likely locus for it. If the compiler believes that the category listing is useful, then he should provide indexes, Chinese and English, to help the user find desired terms. Of course this would approximately double the size of the dictionary.

|A convenient dictionary for both native Chinese and English speakers,
I got hold of this pocket dictionary a few days ago and fell in love with it right away. It has covered all the bases in terms of everyday legal lingo as well as related words and phrases, and the definitions are simple and clear.
The book is actually composed in two dictionaries, one Chinese-English and the other English-Chinese. This feature not only makes it helpful to both English- and Chinese-speaking users, but also facilitates cross-reference.
One very good feature of the book is that every Chinese entry and translation has its pronunciation marked with pinyin, the official Chinese phonetic alphabet in mainland China, so that an English speaker, as long as he or she knows pinyin, can always say things right to the Chinese counterpart regarding legal matters.
In both the Chinese-English and English-Chinese parts, besides general terminology, the dictionary also has sections dedicated to specific subjects, including commercial, criminal, family, housing, immigration and traffic laws. It even has a Chinese translation of Miranda, with all the pronunciation spelt out in pinyin. Also included in appendices are a list of translated daily phrases and a list of U.S. immigration forms.
This convenient dictionary may well become an indispensable tool for people who need to communicate in either English or Chinese as a second language in daily legal situations. It may also be a useful reference aid for more involved users, including professional translators, such as the writer of this review, or some legal writers.

|Absolutely essential dictionary for learning Chinese and English,
I’ve just received a copy of this wonderful dictionary – the Tuttle Chinese English Dictionary by Li Dong, and I can hardly recommend a better dictionary than this one to learn both Chinese and English. What I noticed right away were the ample example sentences in Chinese (with pinyin) and English – really practical sentences with smooth and accurate translations. It is a really a gift to be able to find such good sentences and translate them so perfectly. The short introduction to Chinese and the appendices are alone worth the money, but the organization of the material using blue ink for the Chinese headwords, bold type for the Chinese pinyin and italics for the English translations make this dictionary a great study resource easy on the eyes. I heartily recommend this dictionary to anyone desiring to learn either language.
